The Injustice of Sung's Sentence

Detective admits that too many resources were directed at Sung, resources that should not have been.

The following are a few examples of those who were convicted of crimes similar to those Sung was found guilty of.  Their sentences range from 45 days in jail to 3 years on probation.  Sung received over 10 years in prison.

THE FOLLOWING LETTERS WERE SENT TO THE OREGONIAN

"Which penalty is more just? -- Am I the only one perplexed that Christopher and Tammy Nickel got three years in prison for torturing and nearly killing their [young adopted] daughter, while Sung Koo Kim will serve more than four years for having a panty fetish ('Man apologizes for panty thefts,' Nov. 8)?  I'll admit, a 3,000-panty collection is a bit freaky, but he didn't commit attempted murder.  Did I miss something?"

"Stealing worse than killing? -- In Wednesday's Metro section you reported on the sentences of two convicted men.  One man received a sentence of a little more than 8 years for shooting and killing a woman ('Tigard man gets prison for shooting woman,' June 7).

The other man has received sentences totaling more than 9 years for stealing panties ('Judge adds 5 years 5 months to term of underwear thief').  I am so happy to see our tax money spent so wisely.  What a great system."
